"Iron Monkey" was released in Hong Kong in 1993 and not only became a big hit but became known as perhaps the best martial arts movie ever made. American director Quentin Tarantino begged the powers that be in Hollywood to find distribution in America. His pleas were ignored. With the success of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" last year, Miramax not only restored "Iron Monkey" and added a new soundtrack but also became committed to backing every film made in or around Asia. Finally Americans have the opportunity to see "Iron Monkey" in all its glory. Director Woo-ping Yuen may be unknown but he was responsible for the incredible fight scenes in "Matrix" and "Crouching Tiger". After viewing this remarkable film one can easily understand why Asian audiences were somewhat bored with "Crouching Tiger".

"Iron Monkey" centres on a Zorro type of figure who poses as a kindly doctor by day but at night fights the bad guys with zest and instant retribution. He has help from his girlfriend, Miss Orchid, and a father and son team who innocently get caught up in the corruption of evil city officials. The story is of little importance. This is non-stop action from beginning to end and Yuen leaves little time for the audience to catch its breath. If you have the slightest interest in martial art films, "Iron Monkey" is a must. The choreography and wirework create a mesmerising Chinese ballet, which keeps you on the edge of your seat. While all of the fights are stunning, the final confrontation done on poles high above a raging fire is one that you will not likely forget.

"Iron Monkey" lacks the poetic quality and lush cinematography of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" yet it more than overcomes this with pure energy and action. Enjoy the ride!
