Howard Must Go

Conservative governments: Historical gatekeepers of hell
Harold Hark
13 September 2002

You may have wondered why Tony Blair has been so bellicose and presidential since 9/11. It's because he, like George W Bush, goes to beddy-byes every night with a Bible next to his pillow.

This allows the two "leaders" a sense of moral authority, a Golem-like Christian righteousness in their mission to save their world from our future.

It appears that the Bushwhacker is hellbent on returning this planet to a state of regional and global war, perhaps devastation. And Blair, on the strength of his readings from the Bible, is hellbent to turn himself and his nation into a disciple of that profoundly ignorant American update of Jesus.

It's all madness, pure and simple, but while the voices of maturity and reason are heard everywhere, the rock-throwing, overgrown adolescents in power appear to be unstoppable.

An attack on Iraq of all but the most insignificant of magnitudes, similar to an in 'n' out bank robbery, will ignite the Muslim world as nothing ever has before. And it will ignite quite a few non-Muslims as well. The focus of their hate will be America, of course, but into the equation will step the pitiable nations who support America.

Bush, through his invidious USA PATRIOT act, has already seen to the breakdown of democratic law in that country. Democracy itself was overthrown when he and his brother and the Supreme Court staged the coup that gave him the presidency in the first place.

You have to wonder what the goal is in all of this. Aside from garnering the oil reserves in Iraq, there is no goal beyond boys-own revenge.

A more likely revenge, however, would have been upon the intelligence agencies that failed to prevent 9/11. Bill Gertz's book, Breakdown is all about the sloths in the CIA, the NSA, and the FBI who took huge gobs of taxpayers money in return for their failure to read the simple cereal box runes of incipient terrorism. This has been going on for decades.

In the end it is all about the ineptitude and incompetence of conservative governments. They have historically sent nations into nosedives resulting in depressions or wars. Lacking any vision beyond what to do with a dollar, they go hysterical when it comes to interpreting simple human values. The attack on America required a level of intuitive understanding far beyond the capacities of the singularly untalented Bush administration. They were the worst people in the worst place at the worst time. Not to put too fine a point on it, things couldn't be worse.

The Bushwhacker's chief allies amount to the same thing for their countries. Blair's dogged, fervent warmongering appears ludicrous in the face of mounting opposition in his own party until you realise that he is acting thus because the bible tells him so. And then it becomes downright barmy. With a huge Muslim population, he can expect blood in the streets for his folly.

And John Howard, well, as the antithesis of a leader, his trick is to hop aboard for the ride, wherever it's going. A man out of his depth in just about every instance required of leadership, Howard is nothing more or less than a copy cat. (And you thought you'd left that type behind in primary school.)

Get ready for the opening of the gates of hell, as the Arab League promises. That primeval, grating sound will indeed be horrifying.
