Australia under attack!

From "terrorism, the war against?" Nope. From the war of attrition being waged on culture and the moral values by which a society lives in peace with itself and other societies. This war is not being waged by people in leaky boats or by Wahhabi nutters originating from America's partner in terror, Saudi Arabia. It is being waged by the world's leading democracies, under the umbrella of the Margaret Thatcher-founded International Democratic Union. In its 19 year history, the IDU has sought to promulgate the crackpot ideologies of, among others, certified sociopath Ayn Rand. [See the depressing column by Tim Evans: Right man, right place.]

With George W. Bush's blessing, John Howard has reached his faceless apotheosis as the new chairman of the IDU. He replaces the faceless and exceedingly hapless former Tory leader William Hague.

Howard is correctly perceived to be the right sort of shallow man to absorb and communicate the shabby ideology the IDU and it's corporate masters is foisting on the world. Howard will be their greatest chairman yet, because he not only believes everything they stand for, he is incapable of believing anything else. As Steve Lewis points out in PM in footsteps of Thatcher, Reagan, the mission of the IDU, formed in 1983 and including despotic nations as well as democracies, is "to promote the virtues of free enterprise and defeat the perceived evils of socialism and command-driven economies."

In a nutshell: The old profit over people syndrome, a psychological disorder as old as mankind.

They know that "socialism" as a political force is dead. What they are really attacking here are the conventions and assumptions that underlie cooperation between people. For them the cooperation of societies is the evil that must be replaced by the competition of economies. Their victory will be complete when we no longer think of ourselves as people but as consumers. Exit all value systems but that of self-centred greed.

Here in Oz, The Role Model of the Right (a.k.a Puny Nephew) and his band of Neo-Illiberals have long since adopted a battle plan where anyone suspected of having an intellect and/or a social conscience is attacked as irrelevant, deluded and socialist.

Every Coalition member of Federal Parliament is being coached to attack and destroy, in the most hyperbolic of terms, every advance made over ignorance and its stablemate greed since the bloody Enlightenment.

Espousing small government, they are socially engineering every nook and cranny of our lives. Films are once again being banned to protect adults from sinning against their conservative-approved Hollywood product. Forget Baise-moi, let's return to the days when gingham-clad women stayed on the homestead-dear while John Wayne went after the cattle rustlers. But wait! The bad guys are ringers for members of the Howard Government! Oh well, they could never be accused of being bright, just cunning.

According to the Howards, child care is just another socialist determination to turn our children into twisted mummy-hungry sociopaths. The fact that centuries of the hearth-reared have done the evolution of mankind no favours escapes them.

The ABC, as the media representation of Australians who use their minds for other than abacus clicking, will be vanquished. The Howards, having nothing on their plates but cultural desecration, will keep battering Aunty until they conquer.

Reconciliation? After ten years of Mabo, it's as far away as ever. Without a heart, John Howard is only able to see a world of material progress. The very essence of humanness, an ability to empathise with The Other, is utterly lost on him. And his monotonous, plodding one-dimensionality has rubbed off big time on his cohorts in parliament. Little by little, the remnants of humanity have been squeezed from them, and they stand shoulder to shoulder, like Orwellian cardboard cutouts, to denounce their betters, the one's with the minds.

As for multiculturalism, we are seeing its demise. Scratch an assimilationist and a racist bleeds. But the Howards are not really racists. They don't care what colour you are or whether your eyes slant, as long as you know how to work an abacus and support their limited world view. They are leaving the nitty gritty of raw racism to their supporters out there in Dumb Shit Land.
