I may be sticking my neck out here...
space gifReligion. What a waste. Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Hindu fundamentalists around the world are working assiduously to make everyone their enemy. They need to be phased out of human evolution. But how?

According to my wife, I have the compassion equivalent of a pit bull terrier. Nevertheless, I came to understand many moons ago that compassion is the only way out. Me, I'm sick of hating, but as it is, hate is the operative emotion these days.

To my detriment, I don't have the inclination to check these folks out at the moment, but if you do, let me know what's happening. What they are attempting is to make a unified effort to project peace 'n' love across the planet. Sound bananas? What could be more bananas than the hate-filled projections of George W. Bush?

Christian Coalition: Umeruhca's Taliban Owns Dubya
space gifLast night Australia's ABC began a two part condensed version of the six part With God On Our Side, a documentary chronicling the rise of Christian fundamentalism and its long awaited takeover of Umeruhcan politics with the election of George W. Bush.

Like all right wing organisations, the Christian Coalition preaches "family values". Like all right wing organisations, what they mean by this is a patriarch as breadwinner, with as few rights for women as possible and no rights for anyone else who doesn't conform to their Dick and Jane version of the Bible.

This scary collection of larvals--whose past leaders have ranged from Billy Graham through Jerry Falwell to Pat Robertson--is currently led by Ralph Reed Jr, perhaps the scariest man outside the Bush Administration's Neo Conservatives. Reed is articulate. His ability to sound sane while espousing ideas that are clearly insane is a marked departure from past "prophets" of the drive-in church variety. He has the charisma of one who is quietly confident and trustworthy. He does not pound the pulpit while screaming about the rights of the unborn. On the contrary, he speaks calmly and convincingly. His arguments--for enforced prayer in schools, for the end of the separation between church and state, for the abolition of legal abortion, for the marginalising of homosexuals, for the buildup of military might--are delivered with what appears to be rational thought. He is thus able to sound inclusive while promoting rank exclusivity.

Watching him for awhile, I got the impression that after another term of Bush, signalling the defeat of democratic liberalism in Umeruhca, this man, Ralph Reed Jr, could step into the Oval Office with the greatest of ease.

If you missed the opening segment, the ABC will screen part two next Wednesday night. For extensive information on this documentary, see the link below

Propaganda only works on dummies
space gifIt's darkly interesting that a growing number of Umeruhcans now trust the war credentials of the bloke who went AWOL over the bloke who went to Vietnam and still carries shrapnel in his leg. --HH

President Bush claims that in the fall of 1972, he fulfilled his Air National Guard duties at a base in Alabama. But Bob Mintz was there - and he is sure Mr. Bush wasn't.

Why Bush is ahead in the polls
space gifThe slaughter of children in Beslan has happened over and over again throughout the history of our damaged species. It happens when nationalism goes berserk. --HH

War, says Chris Hedges, author of War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning, plays to some fundamental urges. "Lurking beneath the surface of every society, including ours, is the passionate yearning for a nationalist cause that exalts us, the kind that war alone is able to deliver." When war psychology takes hold, the public believes, temporarily, in a "mythic reality" in which our nation is purely good, our enemies are purely evil, and anyone who isn't our ally is our enemy.

Republicans/Illiberals masters of fear-mongering hate
space gifTaking a cue from our own Philip Ruddock, who claimed Beslan-style attacks could hit Australia if Labor wins, Vice President Dick Cheney has told Umeruhcans that a vote for John Kerry and the Democrats could bring more terrorist attacks on the USA. What he really meant was that the terrorists will hit with renewed force if the Republicans win. But that's what we've come to expect from these hate-filled rednecks in suits. --HH

At the Democrats' convention a few weeks ago, Barack Obama, the keynote speaker, called for civility and restraint in our political discourse. At the just-ended Republican convention, Zell Miller, the GOP keynoter, called for bile, invective, and, well, hate. Political hate. Smear hate.

Preparing For The Worst: Boning Up On The German Experience

Two polls out today show the Coalition clawing back Labor's lead; the two parties are now even on two party preferred. And in the States, Dubya has shot to an eleven point lead over Kerry.

My snarling but cheerful humanism is in danger of being remaindered by cynical misanthropy.

Can it be that the majority of Australians are going to be hoodwinked by Machiavelli Jr yet again? Is there no remnant of ethical integrity, let alone perceptive judgement, left in these people? More...

A few words about Beslan

There is a photo on the front page of The Age today showing a teenage girl convulsed by grief as she kneels at the coffin of the 14 year old friend she has probably known all her life. This girl and hundreds others were killed by the terrorists in Beslan.

In some ways this photo is worse than the horrifying images we have seen in the past few days of the bloodied and traumatised children being carried out of the school. Such inhumanity, especially to children, is utterly incomprehensible; I look at those photos but I do not, can not see them. More...
